The notion that you should not teach your pup to use pads in the house if you eventually want it to go outside is hideously ill advised! I took this to heart and my puppy now has a special area in the house that no matter how many times I clean and disinfect she comes right back to. I take her outside and she waits to come back in and use her spot. I put down pads and she thinks they are a toy made just for shredding. I now have a dog trainer coming to work with her at $50 an hour to try to help me solve this problem. The author is right about one thing - it is far easier to teach good habits from the beginning than to break bad ones. It's a shame her advice led me to allow my puppy to develop bad habits in the first place. Bypass this train wreck and think seriously about buying a book on dogs by someone who actually seems to know something about the subject... Stanley Coren, perhaps.
